Jazz Jams begin again at the Schorr Family Firehouse Stage
Johnson City – Goodwill Theatre is proud to announce as part of The Fifth Anniversary Season of the Schorr Family Firehouse Stage, we will continue our Jazz Jams throughout the 2012-2013 season. Monday Night Jazz Jams are a Johnson City tradition. Join us on select Monday nights for an eclectic mix of Jazz featuring professional and local Jazz performers. All Jazz Jams are hosted by Al Hamme.
Jazz Jams are part of our All That Jazz Series that is graciously sponsored by the Oakdale Mall.
Al hires professional musicians from all around the region, as well as musicians from all around the country. He makes sure to mix up the roster for each Jazz Jam session so you never see the same show twice. The first 30 minutes of any given Jazz Jam is devoted to the four to five musicians hired to get the night started. As other musicians show up, Al makes an assessment of the style of each player he knows and plans accordingly. “Some nights we have marimba players show up and the night has a Latin-jazz theme. Some nights we have more singers show up and we play more vocal standards. Other nights we have two drummers show up and it becomes more back-beat heavy. The idea is to keep evolving as the session progresses. Keep it organic, but at the same time, keep it organized. This is a true jam session between professionals and novice players. It is not an open mic by any means.” Al said.
Al Hamme founded the jazz program at Binghamton University in 1964 and directed it for 33 years. Other responsibilities while on the faculty at Binghamton University included: Director of the Concert Band and Wind Chamber Music Program; Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Music; and Chairman of the Music Department. He also served as the director of the Cornell Jazz Ensemble for six years and was chosen to be the first Artistic Director of the School of Jazz Studies for the New York State Summer School of the Arts Program.
Being a professor at Binghamton University lends itself to having access to a talent pool of student players as well. Al occasionally brings in students from his Jazz History class to sit in on the Jazz Jams. Local high school students have performed in previous Jazz Jams as well. Even some of the staff at Goodwill Theatre have been known to belt out a few tunes with the band. “Al is a local music legend and we are very lucky to have him involved in our Jazz programming and serving on our Board of Directors.” says CEO Naima Kradjian. “Al provides guidance and access to the local pool of high quality musicians and he also encourages new talent. He is also an excellent musician in his own right.” adds Kradjian.
All local and regional musicians and singers are welcome to attend. Please be sure to bring musical charts, sheet music, lyrics and of course your instruments. The restored and reconditioned IBM piano is used for the Jazz Jams. Jazz Jams are quickly becoming a Johnson City tradition and we hope to continue them well into the future as we grow.
