Johnson City, NY – Catch the performance of a local rising star Sydney Lynn Stachyra on Thursday June 28 and Friday June 29 at 7pm, at the Goodwill Theatre’s Schorr Family Firehouse Stage (67 Broad St., Johnson City, NY) in the new family musical Evergreen!
Ms. Stachyra, who graduated from Windsor High School on June 22, will be joining cast of 27 singers for a staged reading of Evergreen, an original fantasy adventure about a girl named Maya, who embarks on a quest from her desert home to seek proof of the legendary evergreen trees, that she has heard of in her grandmother’s stories. Proceeds from the reading will go to benefit “Your Home Public Library” in Johnson City.
The staged reading is presented by the Goodwill Theatre, in partnership with NYC’s Prospect Theater Company and locally-based SRO Productions, as part of the Goodwill Theatre’s “Broadway Bound” Series, which provides opportunities for writers to workshop new musical theater pieces. Artists from Prospect are in residence at the Goodwill from June 18 – 30.
Evergreen, which was originally developed and presented in NYC by Prospect Theater Company in 2009, is directed by Cara Reichel, who co-wrote the book of the musical with Peter Mills. The music and lyrics are also by Peter Mills, recipient of the prestigious 2010 Cole Porter Award and 2010 Kleban Prize for Lyrics. Broadwayworld.com declared: “Even when writing for childrens’ voices, Mills makes the music beautifully intricate and the lyrics wonderfully intelligent. The otherworldly melodies immediately set the scene… the book is simple enough for a child to understand, but witty and wise enough for an adult to appreciate.”
Ms. Stachyra is joined by a cast of both adult and youth actors, professionals from NYC as well as local artists. The adult cast of Evergreen also includes Aaron Riesebeck who plays Maya’s brother Joshi, Lucy Sorlucco who plays her grandmother Yamma, and Alan Ariano, Andrew Arrow, and Katie Bruno who portray her other family members. The adult ensemble also includes Duke Anderson, Emily Borromeo, Ben Moss, Damian Norfleet, Josh Streeter, Peter Tedeschi, and Hansel Tan. The youth ensemble includes Julia Black, Lily Bosnick, Camille Brock, Natalie Ehrensbeck, Emma Goldberg, Hannah Goldberg, Emma Haupt, David Liburdi, Julia McCloe, Josh Mertens, Henry Miller, Cassie Pinataro, Mikalea Shelp, Melia Staples, and Jacob Weir. The stage manager is Joseph Fletcher and music director is Yan Li.
This is the second residency that Prospect Theater Company has undertaken in partnership with the Goodwill Theatre. In August of 2010 the Goodwill presented readings of two other new musicals: The Flood and Sunfish. Ms. Stachyra performed as a cast member in both shows, and is looking forward to the reunion for Evergreen: “I am so excited and honored to work again with Peter and Cara on this amazing musical. Having worked with them in 2010 I know it will be a wonderful experience. I have learned so much working with them both.”
She won’t have a lot of time to reflect upon the shows, in August Ms. Stachyra will be participating in The Strawberry One Act Festival Off-Broadway at the St. Clements Theatre in Manhattan in a show is called “Kids These Days” playing the role of Lexy. Rehearsals for that begin the day after Evergreen concludes.
In the fall, Sydney Lynn Stachyra will be attending Emerson College in Boston, the nation’s only four-year college devoted exclusively to the study of communication and performing arts, where she will pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts Acting Major. For local musical audiences this might be the last time you have a chance to see Ms. Stachyra in her hometown for awhile. Your next date might have to be on Broadway.
Tickets for both performances of “Evergreen” are $3 for Adults, $2 for Seniors and Children get in free with the purchase of an Adult or Senior ticket. Benefits from the musical staged reading will go to help “Your Home Public Library” of Johnson City.
This program is funded in part through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Goodwill Theatre wishes to express our gratitude to the Performers’ Unions: ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION, AMERICAN GUILD OF MUSICAL ARTISTS, AMERICAN GUILD OF VARIETY ARTISTS, SAG-AFTRA through Theatre Authority, Inc. for their cooperation in permitting the Artists to appear on this program.”
