The Goodwill Theatre presents the Lorraine Bates Love and Laughs Comedy Cabaret on Sunday, October 25, at 2 pm at the Schorr Family Firehouse Stage in Johnson City. The Lorraine Bates Cabaret is part of the Big Apple Comedy Club Series sponsored by Bates Troy and Visions underwritten by the Schorr Family.
“Lorraine appeared at the Firehouse in 2011 singing folk, R&B, and standards. In this show she will add some comedy and looks forward to expanding her creativity. Lorraine brings her unique blend of wit and heart to her show and we are glad she has chosen our venue to showcase her work,” said Naima Kradjian, Goodwill Theatre CEO.
The multi-talented Lorraine Bates was inspired to start singing by a young man’s serenade when living in Texas. She soon found her own voice and began singing in El Paso. Her family travels took her to many states: from Oregon to Alabama, from Illinois to West Virginia. However, the Big Apple was a constant lure for Lorraine. She made it to the New York with a natural gift for music. She began to study acting, singing, and dance. She taught herself how to play guitar, banjo and mandolin and furthered her career by grooming her talents with workshops from the National Academy of Popular Music and Songwriters’ Guild. Her classes led to many collaborations and styles of writing in jazz, blues, country and pop.
In performance, Lorraine captivates her audience with energy, warmth and enthusiasm. She has performed internationally in France, Italy and Spain.
Another audience is equally important to Lorraine, who is committed to lifting the human spirit with song. Lorraine performed for hospitalized AIDS patients with the Hearts and Voices program at a time when people with AIDS were greatly feared and alone. Continuing with the gift of volunteering, Lorraine also helped with The Covenant House, organization that helps homeless teenage moms rebuild their lives through group therapy, and training for job interviews.
Lorraine also takes pride in being an active member in many professional associations including Women in Music, BMI, The National Academy of Popular Music, Songwriters’ Guild and The Nashville Songwriters Association International of New York.
